Winter Rye Cover Crop Seed is the hardiest of the winter grains and is one of the most widely used cover crops in the United States. Winter Rye will germinate at temperatures as low as 35 degrees F and in soils low in fertility.  Great for large acreage or small home gardens to protect the soil from wind and water erosion, scavenge for unused nutrients, prevent soil compaction, and suppress weeds.

BENEFITS:

Winter Rye’s dense, fibrous roots explore laterally and vertically, improving aggregate stability and infiltration while resisting compaction and scavenging for nitrogen.  The plant will store the nutrients until it is cut and tilled back into your soil, releasing the nutrients for your spring plants to use.  Winter Rye breaks down quickly and will not re-sprout from vegetative tissue.

PURE SEED:

99.46% Winter Rye Seed

0.54% Inert Matter

DIRECTIONS:

Sow 5-7 pounds of Winter Rye Cover Crop Seed per 1,000 square feet (50 lbs per acre) in the fall or when your growing season is over. Use a drop spreader, broadcast spreader, or broadcast seed by hand and lightly rake into the top 1/4 inch of soil.  For a more even coverage, make two seeding passes over the garden at a right angle to each other.  If you seed before the fall rains begin, the seeded area should be watered lightly until the seed germinates.

For nutrient recycling, cut it back before it goes to seed or 4-6 weeks before the next planting season.  Till or work it under the soil so the nutrients are released into the soil as it decomposes.  For no-till options, cut and cover the Winter Rye Cover Crop with heavy black plastic 6-8 weeks before planting your next crop.
